Baits for Sturgeon Fishing
From the moment I posted this video on our facebook group and on youtube I was getting emails regarding the baits mentioned. A good guide for what to use will be evident with what is happening in the river. What type of Salmon are running? Are the Eulachon's in? Having a basic knowledge of where you are fishing and what is going on in the water will drastically increase your chances of reeling in Sturgeon.
There are many grey area baits that are used. Eels and Lamprey are two of the most common out there used. In some sections of the Fraser river it is Roe only, so knowing your regulations is important. Over time folks have tried everything. It comes down to being in the right spot and having something with scent. If they are hungry you'll be in luck. On the good days, when your running low on bait. Feel free to try a good old fashioned handful of worms...YES THEY WORK TOO!
Most of the bait you need can be purchased at your local stores. If you live in BC and there is a salmon opening, it's a good idea to go try and get you bait that way. Remember to stay within the limits and don't take more than you need.
