Wild Fish Conservation In British Columbia
Sturgeon Slayers had the pleasure of taking out the British Columbia Liberal Steelhead Caucus to discuss very important and complex issues surrounding the wild fish in the region. The group that visited us was lead by Fraser Nicola MLA Jackie Tegart. During their visit, we discussed non-selective salmon harvesting, habit, politics, and conservation of all species in the Fraser River.
Keeping the conversation alive is how we can strive to make sustainable change. We are thankful that we had the opportunity to share our experience with several MLA’s. Watch the video below to listen to Fraser Nicola MLA Jackie Tegart discuss this complex yet extremely important topic.
She notes that climate change, habitat loss, and pollution are all playing into the decline of British Columbia’s wild fish stocks. But she also notes that justicial confusion, politics, and lack of leadership are just as important. She further explains her thoughts, who the committee spoke with, and the challenges that are faced while working to save British Columbia’s wild fish.

“Conservation of our salmon populations (and wild fish) will require the support and cooperation of all levels of government - local, provincial, federal, and even international. It is also crucial that we consult with our indigenous leaders and communities. I was honoured to stand in the house today and reaffirm my commitment to preserving our wild salmon.”
“We do not want to lose these iconic species, not on our watch.”
- Jackie Tegart
